“Where we love is home – home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes
Nobody knows and loves a place like the people who call it home, so a few months ago we asked our Glogster users to tell us all about their hometowns via pictures, text, audio, video and links in the Glogster Hometown Contest.
We had a fantastic response, with 500 submissions giving captivating insights into the hometowns of gloggers around the world, all competing for a prize of $1000.
The glogs were judged based on informational value, use of media, structure and functionality, as well as overall appearance and experience. There was a very high standard of entries, showcasing great glogging know-how as well as a lot of hometown pride.
Now as summer comes to an end and many of you will be returning from vacation to the comforts of your homes, it is time to reveal to you the top hometown glog. The Glogster team have had a great time getting acquainted with your hometowns and enjoying your unique perspectives, but there can only be one winner…
And the winner is Nathanael Brathwaite with:
Congratulations to Nathanael Brathwaite from Olympia High School Orlando, the winner of the Hometown Glog Competition, who impressed judges with his rich color scheme, dazzling images and mouth-watering facts about English food. An exploration of attractions in the city center as well as some in the surrounding area, such as Brighton Beach and Legoland, make this glog a coherent and truly interactive travel guide, and a unique view of Nathanael’s hometown.
“The best thing about making the glog was being able show where I come from, my culture and history,” says proud winner Nathanael, “I plan on putting some of the prize money into my savings and donating the rest to a children’s cancer organisation, because I know what it’s like to lose someone to cancer and I hate to see kids not smiling.”
Here is a selection of runner-up glogs from around the world, demonstrating local pride and great glogging know-how. We hope that you enjoy exploring them as much as we did!
This glog from the Croatian coast is just bursting with beautiful images, from useful maps to tempting turquoise seascapes to lots of examples of local delicacies. This glogger also made the most of our graphics, with the seabird stickers and parchment theme holding everything together.
This very patriotic glimpse of Fort Worth is unmistakably Texan – it includes cowboys, BBQ ribs, and even a video with a Country and Western soundtrack. We particularly liked the red, white and blue colour scheme and the directions from the airport.
This small-town glog from Kentucky shows a lot of in-depth knowledge about the history of Sebree, expressed with true local pride and a lot of striking images. We loved the background made from a local map, not to mention the idea of a pharmacy with a soda fountain!
As you can see, the Hometown Glog Contest has yielded some beautiful and informative results, showcasing what can be achieved when Glogster and hometown pride come together. The Glogster team extends hearty congratulations to our prizewinner and runners up, and a big thank you to everybody who shared their homes with us – keep an eye out for future contests and ways to show us your glogging skills.
