National Hugging Day occurs every year on January 21, and is marked around the globe. The idea behind the event is to express our affection for friends and family through the simple gift of a hug. Who’s the last person you hugged? Was it a supportive parent, a reunited friend, or a family member who needed a little reassurance? Whomever it was, you can rest assured that you passed on a multitude of mental and physical benefits to them, and received a fair few of your own! Hugging truly is the gift that keeps on giving…
A hug instantly boosts your oxytocin – this is the chemical in your brain that leads to social bonding, and negates feelings of loneliness or insecurity. If someone’s looking left out, a hug can change their entire day, from the inside out. Furthermore, a long hug can increase serotonin levels. In balance with other neurotransmitters, serotonin leads to feelings of general wellbeing and happiness. Even in life’s darker moments, a hug can renew hope!
Studies suggest that there are physical benefits to the act of hugging as well – hugging releases tension and relaxes muscles. So whether you’ve just run a marathon or are feeling tense after a long day at the office, a good long hug can iron out all those knots and increase circulation.
Add to these rather technical effects the things we can see for ourselves: hugging improves self esteem, makes friends feel appreciated and needed, and creates strong bonds between huggers. It’s also a wonderful way to express support and care, without making someone feel pressured into sharing their problems before they’re ready.
